The topics covered in this lab include the current-voltage characteristics of photovoltaic (solar) cells and the concept of "matching" a load to a power source to maximize the power delivered to the load. Instructors in electrical engineering programs may choose to emphasize more of the theoretical basis of maximum power transfer. The terms photovoltaic and solar are often used interchangeably when referring to the conversion of light into energy.

The students use a bright light source (for example, an overhead projector, a spotlight, or sunlight) and a photovoltaic panel to generate electricity. A photovoltaic panel consists of one of more photovoltaic cells. The photovoltaic panel is connected to a variable load resistor, enabling students to investigate the effects of varying the load on the panel performance. Color filters are placed on top of the photovoltaic panel to allow qualitative investigation of the spectral dependence of panel performance.
