Sample answer does not match the requirements
As indicated by the previous comment, the sample answer behavior does not match the customer requirements. It logs when a switch state changes, not when the zone state changes. Since the log file does not indicate if the switch change was on or off, not only is this not what the question asked, it is not useful information.

all the solutions provided are just over engineered, so over the top.

Solution contains blatant errors
I'm sorry, but this is a very poor example solution. The application does not behave according to the specification (it logs to the file whenever an *input* changes, regardless of whether the *state* changed, and does not increment the zero-based index number), it is by far not the most "scalable" solution, despite its claims (you have to add an element to 4 different type defs in order to add a zone), and involves all sorts of duplication (a separate case, with almost identical code, for each input type). There are many more problems, but I've already expended enough energy ...
