This experiment will teach students a new relationship between voltage, current, and RLC circuits. Students will learn the characteristics of sinusoidal current and voltage waveforms. The definitions of peak-to-peak value, peak and rms values, phase angle, complex impedance and base values (per-unit values) in AC circuits will be taught. Students will use the LabVIEW simulation provided to study resistive, inductive and capacitive loads in single-phase AC circuits. In this experiment, students will also analyze the steady-state sinusoidal behavior of a single-phase AC circuit using phasors.

Students will need to know the basic concepts of how sinusoids can be characterized by complex phasors. This topic, as well as the three types of loads in a single-phase AC circuit, should be introduced in lecture prior to this lab. A helpful prerequisite for this experiment is a signal processing course.
