At around 4-6MB/s, DMA consumes a considerable portion of the memory bus bandwidth, which prevents the host CPU from executing. This issue occurs only when data is arriving at a steady rate. If the FPGA buffers data to be written to the FIFO and transfers it in chunks of approximately 32 words, DMA can sustain higher rates and incur lower CPU overhead.
