The default settings for the serial port use port 0 with 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity. If your system does not match these settings they can be changed in the Serial Settings input cluster. The GPIB-232CT dip switch positions that correspond to these settings are: ON, OFF, ON, OFF, OFF, OFF, ON, OFF. When using the NI Instrument Simulator as a GPIB device, the dip switch positions corresponding to these serial settings are: OFF, ON, OFF, OFF, OFF, OFF, OFF, ON.
Palm_Advanced_GPIB.vi has three groups of functions. The "Main" functions are used to write general commands to a serial equipped instrument using the PDA. The second and third functions are device specific and are designed to be used with the NI Instrument Simulator. The "Test" function simply sends the "*TST?" command to the simulator to ensure communication has been established with the simulator. The "Data" functions retrieve a simulated DC voltage and sine wave data using the "MEAS:DC?" and "SENS:DATA?" commands respectively.
To run the VI:
1. Initialize the serial port by pressing "Open".
2. Write and read to the serial port.
3. Close the serial port and stop execution of the VI and by pressing "Exit".
