Overview

A servo accelerometer contains a seismic mass and servo mechanism that controls the position of the mass. The acceleration causes the mass to move. The position-sensing device detects the motion and produces the error signal in the servo loop, developing a current flowing through the force-generating element, which balances the force due to the acceleration. The current in the feedback loop is the measure of the acceleration.

Servo accelerometer. a = acceleration, 1 = seismic mass, 2 = position-sensing device, 3 = servomechanism, 4 = damper, 5 = case.
