Capacitance Tachometer
Overview
In a capacitance tachometer, one of the plates or spacers forming the capacitor is a part of a rotating object and moves with it; another plate (or plates) is stationary. When the object rotates, it periodically changes the relative position of the plates or the dielectric constant of the gap, producing variations in the capacitance. The frequency of alternations is proportional to the speed of the object.
