LabVIEW Monitors North Sea Gas Pipeline

The Challenge

Developing and installing a long-term monitoring system for a 120 km pipeline at the Ormen Lange natural gas field off the coast of Norway.

The Solution

Using a custom, flexible system developed in the NI LabVIEW graphical programming environment and deployed using Schmid Engineering ZMobile standard hardware based on the NI LabVIEW Embedded Module for ADI Blackfin Processors. The Ormen Lange is the largest natural gas field under development on the Norwegian continental shelf.

The pipeline traverses the Storegga rock slide, which is one of the longest rock slides to exist on a continental shelf. Bjørge AS, a firm specializing in intelligent underwater instrumentation and condition monitoring developed a long-term monitoring system, based on Naxys technology, for installation at the Ormen Lange. The monitoring system must survive extreme subsea conditions, including strong underwater currents, temperatures as low as -1°C, and pressure ratings up to 150 bar.

LabVIEW and ADI Blackfin Processors contribute to a monitoring system for extreme conditions.

The team developed this system mainly in LabVIEW and is deploying it with the Schmid Engineering ZMobile hardware deployment platform, which is based on the LabVIEW Embedded Module for Blackfin Processors. The combination of LabVIEW and ADI Blackfin Processors delivered the stability, versatility, performance, and the power consumption/battery life we needed to meet time-to-market and quality requirements.
