The latest NI C Series release includes two serial interface modules – the NI 9870 for RS232 and the NI 9871 for RS485. While NI CompactRIO controllers feature a single RS232 serial port, you can use these new modules to add more serial-enabled peripheral devices such as sensors, smart motors, bar code scanners, printers, and scales that easily connect to a CompactRIO system. Each NI 987x module has four serial ports, so you can add up to 32 serial ports to an 8-slot CompactRIO chassis.

Flexible Ports for Many Peripherals

The serial modules have configurable baud rates of up to 921.6 Kbaud and 1.846 Mbaud for RS232 and RS485 connectivity, respectively, to interface a wide variety of commercial and industrial serial devices with CompactRIO. Available with modular jack to D-Sub cables, both modules feature 64 B transmit/receive FIFOs per port.

The new NI 987x C Series modules add four RS232 or RS485 serial ports to CompactRIO systems, with the option of modular jack to D-Sub cables

Powered by LabVIEW FPGA

The NI LabVIEW FPGA interface for NI 987x modules helps you implement custom serial protocols and hardware-level timing previously available only with custom FPGA development and external circuitry. With user-defined FPGA-level control on the serial modules, you can apply the advantages of FPGAs, including high-speed timing and triggering, to serial communications.
