NI Acquires microLEX for Video and Audio Test Products
With microLEX domain expertise in video and audio test, NI now can deliver automated test solutions for the rapidly growing digital video and audio market with its recent acquisition.
In February, NI acquired Select National Instruments Alliance Partner microLEX Systems A/S. MicroLEX develops video and audio test solutions such as VideoMASTER and HearMASTER, which are emblematic of the success of NI LabVIEW software, PXI hardware, and modular instruments as a lower-cost, higher-performance platform for automated test customers. With this acquisition, NI strengthens its product offerings for the rapidly growing digital video and audio market as professional and consumer devices expand to support DVI/HDMI digital video and S/PDIF digital audio standards.
Birger Schneider, the microLEX managing director and founder, noted, “As a Select Alliance Partner, we have had a long-standing and prosperous relationship with NI. Our 16 years of experience designing low-cost video and audio test solutions will help NI become the premier worldwide supplier in this fast growing segment of test.”
Schneider remains the microLEX managing director, leading the company in the development of automated test and measurement solutions for video and audio systems, while NI and microLEX merge their operations.

MicroLEX Products
MicroLEX VideoMASTER and HearMASTER products provide a powerful set of analysis and generation tools for analog and digital video and audio, including the following:
- Digital VideoMASTER performs functional test of digital video in relation to standards such as DVI and HDMI and the characteristics of such standards. It employs two PXI hardware modules – the microLEX PXI VideoSPX-I deserializer module for analysis or the microLEX PXI VideoSPX-O serializer module for generation as well as the NI PXI-6542 high-speed digital I/O module with 100 MS/s, 32 channels, and 8 Mb/ch.
- Analog VideoMASTER performs analog video analysis and production test of analog video signals. It offers solutions for composite video, S-Video, and component video (HDTV and SDTV). For analog video analysis, it uses the PCI or PXI digitizing engine of NI 5122 devices (14-bit, 100 MS/s, 2-channel digitizers) or NI 5124 devices (12-bit, 200 MS/s, 2-channel digitizers). For analog video generation, it uses the signal generation capabilities of the NI PXI-5421 module with 16-bit, 100 MS/s generation.
- HearMASTER tests and analyzes audio components such as hearing aids, headsets, telephones, and loudspeakers. The task-oriented user interface makes test programming simple and fast, supporting a high confidence level in measurements of audio devices.
