The total instantaneous atmospheric pressure at a point, minus the static (average) pressure at that point. p is the symbol used for sound pressure. If the sound pressure is given in logarithmic or relative units, it is called sound pressure level.

Pressure is analogous to the temperature at a given point produced by a space heater. Sound pressure amplitude at a point is determined by a variety of factors: sound power of the source, proximity to the source, reflections within the environment, direction relative to the source’s main axis, and the presence of other sources of sound within the immediate environment (ambient noise).
