transmission loss (TL)
The attenuation at a given frequency or range of frequencies of a signal that is passed along a transmission line, or through a telecommunications circuit.
Specifically for acoustics: Of a partition, for a specified frequency or frequency band, the difference in the sound power level striking the specimen in the source room and that transmitted into the receive room. Alternatively, minus 10 times the logarithm of the sound transmission coefficient. Mathematically, this is the noise reduction between the chambers, plus ten times the common logarithm of the ratio of the test specimen plan area to the Sabine absorption of the receiving room. The assumption is made that all sound reaching the receive room passed through the specimen, that is, the absence of flanking sound transmission. ASTM E90
