General DCOM Configurations for Windows 95/98/Me
Overview
This document provides a set of steps that are used to configure DCOM on Windows 9x/Me. If you are using DCOM in conjunction with remote OPC, refer to the related links at the bottom of this document.

1. Remote Administration Configuration
a) Go to Start>>Settings>>Control panel. Double-click Passwords.b) Select the Remote Administration tab. Select Enable remote administration of this server.
c) Click on the Add button. Now select the users you wish to have access to your server. To do this, select the user name and then click the Add button. After you are done with adding users click OK to return to the Password properties window. Click OK again.
d) Reboot your computer.
2. User Level Access Configuration
a) Go to Start>>Settings>>Control panel. Double-click Network.
b) Choose the Access Control tab.
c) Select the User level access control option and enter the NT domain name you are logging into.
d) Reboot your computer.
3. Remote Registry Services Installation
Installation from the Windows Installation CD (Windows 95/98 only)
a) Go to Start>>Settings>>Control panel. Double-click Network.
b) Click on the Add button in the Configuration tab. The Select Network Component Type window appears.
c) Choose Service and click on the Add button.
d) Click on the Have disk button. The Install from disk window appears.
e) Make sure your Windows installation CD is in the drive. Click Browse and browse to the following directory:
Windows 95: <cd-romdrive>\admin\nettools\remotereg
Windows 98: <cd-romdrive>\tools\reskit\netadmin\remotreg
f) Select the .inf file in that directory and click OK to install remote registry services. (While installing, you may be prompted for files. Look in the \Win95 or \Win98 directories on your Windows installation CD to locate the files).
g) Reboot your computer so that the changes take effect.
Installation from the Microsoft Web Site (Windows 95/Me only)
If you do not have the Windows 95 installation CD, try installing Remote Registry Service in the following way. (If you have the CD, use the above procedure).
a) Go to the following URL: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95upg/remote/1/W95/EN-US/remote.exe
b) This URL will start downloading a file called Remote.exe. Create a new folder called Remote on your hard drive and save Remote.exe in that folder.
c) After downloading is complete, run the file. It will open up an MS-DOS window and ask Do you want to extract these files now (y/n)?. Press Y.
d) After the files have been extracted, close the MS-DOS window.
e) Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop and choose Properties.
f) Click on the Add button in the Configuration tab. The Select Network Component Type window appears.
g) Choose Service and click on the Add button.
h) Click on the Have disk button. The Install from disk window appears.
i) Click Browse and browse to the Remote folder created in the step b).
j) Select the .inf file in that directory and click OK to install remote registry services. (While installing, you may be prompted for files. Look in the following directories: c:\windows or c:\windows\system. You can always use the Start>>Find>>Files or Folders to locate the files).
k) Reboot your computer so that the changes take effect.
4. DCOM Installation
Windows 98:
Windows 98 comes with DCOM installed. However, to make sure that you have the latest version of DCOM, follow this procedure.
a) Go to the following internet URL: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp
b) Click on the link DCOM98 for Windows 98 to download dcom98.exe.
c) Click on the link DCOM98 for Windows 98 configuration utility to download dcm95cfg.exe.
d) Execute dcom98.exe and then execute dcm95cfg.exe.
e) After installation is completed, reboot your computer.
Windows 95:
a) Go to the following internet URL: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom95/download.asp
b) Click on the link DCOM95 for Windows 95 to download dcom95.exe (Note: you can also obtain dcom95.exe from Microsoft Visual Basic CD-ROM 5.0 (Enterprise, Professional or Standard editions) in the \Pro\Tools\DCOM95 directory)
c) Click on the link DCOM95 for Windows 95 configuration utility to download dcm95cfg.exe.
d) Execute dcom95.exe and then execute dcm95cfg.exe.
e) After installation is completed, reboot your computer.
Windows Me:
Windows ME comes with DCOM. However, you still need the DCOM configuration utility.
a) Go to the following internet URL: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp
b) Click on the link DCOM98 for Windows 98 configuration utility to download dcm95cfg.exe.
c) Execute dcm95cfg.exe.
d) After installation is completed, reboot your computer.
