Overview

This article explains the upgrade policy of NI-FBUS Configurator and NI-FBUS Monitor, it also lists the ordering information for NI-FBUS software upgrade.

Version Numbering and Upgrade Policy

Version numbers for the NI-FBUS software consist of three fields:

  • The first digit is the Major Version
  • The second digit is the Minor Version
  • The third digit is the Update Version (free upgrade)

For example, "NI-FBUS Configurator 3.1.1" indicates major version 3 of NI-FBUS Configurator, minor version 1 of Configurator 3, and update version 1 of Configurator 3.1.

The changes to Update Version are free of charge. The Major Version upgrades and Minor Version upgrades carry a small upgrade fee, because major/minor upgrades deliver new features and significant improvements. The upgrade cost is typically 1/3 of the original license price.

For example, customers need to pay for the upgrade from Configurator 2.3.6 to Configurator 3.1 and upgrade from Configurator 3.0 to Configurator 3.1, but don't need to pay for the upgrade from Configurator 2.3.5 to Configurator 2.3.6 or upgrade from Configurator 3.1 to Configurator 3.1.1.

FAQ about Upgrade

What kind of documents do I need for the upgrade?
You should provide the proof of software purchase, or the original OE/PO number as well as the upgrade part number. For more information, please contact NI sales representatives.

How can I increase the link segments of NI-FBUS Configurator?
The default link segment number of Configurator is 4; if you need more segments, you can order Configurator Segment Upgrade Kit (part number 850283-03) to increase the segment number.

Do I need to upgrade NI-FBUS Communications Manager after the upgrade of Configurator?
No, the NI-FBUS Configurator already includes the same version of NI-FBUS Communications Manager software.

Can I use different version of NI-FBUS Communications Manager (CM) and Configurator in the same machine?
Normally we don't recommend using different version of NI-FBUS CM and Configurator, because sometimes they can not work together, like 2.3.6 version Configurator and 3.0(or 3.1) version NI-FBUS CM. However, if you really need to use newer version NI-FBUS CM with Configurator to support your new hardware, you can install NI-FBUS Configurator first then install newer version NI-FBUS CM; for example, you has Configurator 3.0 installed, but you need to work with PCMCIA-FBUS Series 2 card, then you can install NI-FBUS CM 3.1 to support the new card.
