Overview

This document will guide you through several ideas for troubleshooting your OPC server.

Using Remote OPC

If you are unable to connect to your OPC server remotely, follow these steps:

  1. First, make sure you can access the OPC server locally. To do this, open Server Explorer on the machine where the NI-DAQ OPC server is installed and try to connect to it. In Windows, Server Explorer is located in Start>>Programs>>National Instruments.

Using Local OPC

If you are unable to connect to your OPC server locally, you might have one of the following situations:

  • Server Explorer cannot connect to the DAQ OPC server at all.

There are several reasons why you might not be able to connect to the NI-DAQ OPC Server. We recommend going through the following list in order:
    1. You are experiencing a known issue.
    2. The server is not configured properly.
    3. The server is not installed properly.
  • Server Explorer can connect to the server, but some of the items are not working.

  • If none of the above apply, follow these steps:
    1. Make sure you have the latest NI-DAQ driver.
    2. NI-DAQ OPC applications have a large number of tags. To narrow the scope of the problem, it is very useful to start with a new configuration file. Select Tools»Traditional NI-DAQ Configuration»Create New Configuration in Measurement & Automation Explorer. Create and test a few virtual channels at a time, and test them with the OPC server. In this manner, you can isolate virtual channels. For example, you could determine whether the problem occurs after adding a particular tag on a certain device or SCXI module.
    3. If the communication from the Server Explorer works, but does not work from the client of your choice, the problem likely resides in the OPC client. Search the available online technical support resources for client specific entries.
    4. Contact National Instruments Technical Support if none of the above suggestions help.
