1394-A is the IEEE designation for a standard, high performance serial bus. (It's also known as FireWire, a term trademarked by Apple Computer, which invented FireWire in 1989.) The 1394-A bus supports data rates of 100, 200 and 400 Mbits/s, and the 1394-B can support from 800 to 3200 Mbits/s. Like USB, 1394 enables plug-and-play configuration. In the consumer electronics world, FireWire is also known as iLink (used on Sony's Digital Camcorders).

FireWire is a frame-based architecture. It also supports isochronous modes, which permit the streaming of real time data.
