Overview

This document describes the new features of the latest version of the LabWindows/CVI Real-Time Module. You can also find this information in the LabWindows/CVI 9.0 Release Notes.

Watchdog Timer API

The PXI Hardware Watchdog is a built-in dedicated counter/timer on the PXI controller that you can use to detect when an application running on the PXI controller has "died," or even when an external process has stopped responding to the PXI controller. Use the NI watchdog functions in the Real-Time utility library to detect and respond to failure conditions in your application, even if your software becomes unresponsive.

Reliance File System Support

The Datalight Reliance file system provides fast disk access and data preservation in the event of a power interruption. Refer to the "How Do I Install Reliance on my RT PC or PXI Target?" document for information about installing the Reliance file system on a real-time desktop PC target.

Internet Library

The LabWindows/CVI Internet Library is supported on real-time targets. The Internet Library includes functions to access FTP, Telnet, POP3, and SMTP servers from your real-time applications.

Improved Ethernet Compatibility

The LabWindows/CVI Real-Time Module 8.6 includes expanded Ethernet chipset support for real-time desktop PCs. Visit ni.com/info and enter the info code etspc for more information about which Ethernet chipsets are compatible with real-time desktop PCs.

Easier IP Address Setup for Real-Time Targets

Real-time targets with the LabWindows/CVI Real-Time Module 9.0 installed include automatic network connection capabilities. When you plug a target into a network and turn the target on, the target uses the target name to attempt a DHCP network connection. If the target is unable to initiate a DHCP connection, the target connects to the network with a link-local IP address.
