The number of digits displayed at the readout display of a traditional DMM. Often specified as a certain number of full digits (that is, digits that can display values from 0 to 9) and an additional over-range digit referred to as a ½ digit. The ½ digit can only take the value of 0 or 1. For example, a 6 ½ digit display has seven readouts, the most significant readout can take a value of 0 or 1 while the other six readouts can take any value from 0 to 9. Hence, the number of counts is ± 1,999,999. This should not be confused with resolution, a DMM can have many more digits displayed than its effective resolution.
