A microphone can produce an electrical signal that is proportional to the variation of the sound pressure of the air immediately in front of the microphone. A microphone also can measure the sound signals that rotating or reciprocating machinery emit. You can perform order analysis on these sound signals to separate the sound components that different mechanical parts emit. Thus, you can evaluate the sounds of individual mechanical parts as well as the physical conditions of the mechanical parts and the machine as a whole.
