Some RT targets have support for onboard USB hardware. You can connect an external USB Communications Device Class (CDC) ACM device to a USB port of an RT target and then access the device from VIs running on the RT target. To access the device, modify and use existing driver VIs that are configured for serial communication and use NI-VISA to communicate with the device.

Complete the following steps to modify a driver to communicate with a USB device.

  1. Connect the external USB device to the USB port of the RT target.
  2. Open the initialization driver VI for the device. If you do not have a driver installed for the device, use the NI Instrument Driver Finder to download and install a driver.
  3. Right-click the VISA resource name control on the front panel of the initialization driver VI and select Select VISA Class»I/O Session»USB Raw from the shortcut menu.
Note  When you modify drivers that are configured for serial communication, you do not need to specify values for serial-specific properties.
  4. Clean up the block diagram and save the VI.
