National Instruments offer various solutions for acquiring and processing images from a camera on a robot. The following list describes a few options you can explore to implement vision-related functionality in a typical LabVIEW robotics application:

  • Use a desktop computer, industrial controller, or another target that runs a Windows operating system to perform one of the following tasks:
    • Communicate vision-related commands to a camera on a robot.
    • Acquire images from a camera on a robot wirelessly and process image data offline.
  • Use an NI RIO target that connects to a camera, such as an Internet protocol (IP) camera, and perform image acquisition and processing on the target.
  • Use an NI Smart Camera to acquire and process images.

After you decide on a hardware implementation, use NI software that integrates vision algorithms with other parts of robotics applications. The NI Vision Acquisition Software provides driver software for acquiring, displaying, logging, and monitoring images from cameras. The NI Vision Development Module includes hundreds of functions for acquiring and processing images from cameras.

Refer to the National Instruments Web site at for more information about the NI Vision platform, including embedded vision systems, NI Smart Cameras, and vision software.
