Part 2: Creating a Fixed-Point Algorithm (FPGA IP Builder)

In Part 1 of this tutorial, you create a new LabVIEW project with an FPGA target that contains an IP Builder project item. In Part 2 of this tutorial, you create a VI with the fixed-point FIR filter algorithm. The VI must exist under the IP Builder project item. You can either create a new VI or add an existing VI.

Creating a New Algorithm VI

Complete the following steps to create a new algorithm VI under the IP Builder project item.

  1. Open the project you created in Part 1 of this tutorial.
  2. In the Project Explorer window, navigate to My Computer»FPGA Target (PXI-7851R)»IP Builder.
  3. Right-click IP Builder and select New»VI from the shortcut menu.
  4. In the new, blank VI that appears, use the FPGA IP Builder functions to create a fixed-point FIR filter algorithm.
  5. Save the VI as FIR.vi to the directory where you saved the project.
  6. Verify the FIR.vi appears under the IP Builder project item.
  7. Save the project.

Adding an Existing Algorithm VI

If you want to generate FPGA IP from an existing algorithm VI, you first must add this VI to the IP Builder project item. For this tutorial, refer to labview\examples\FPGAIPBuilder\FIR\Algorithm\FIR.vi for a completed version of the fixed-point FIR filter algorithm. Complete the following steps to add this algorithm VI to the IP Builder project item.

  1. Copy the FIR.vi to the directory where you saved the project in Part 1 of this tutorial.
  2. Open the project.
  3. In the Project Explorer window, navigate to My Computer»FPGA Target (PXI-7851R)»IP Builder.
  4. Right-click IP Builder and select Add»File from the shortcut menu.
  5. In the dialog box that appears, navigate to the algorithm VI in the project directory and click Add File.
  6. Verify the FIR.vi appears under the IP Builder project item.
  7. Save the project.

After you create a fixed-point algorithm VI and add the VI to the IP Builder project item, you can create a directives item from this VI in Part 3 of this tutorial.
