Parent Topic: Getting Started with Devices

Before You Begin: Familiarize yourself with the concepts explained in Device and Software Types.

Complete the following steps to add a new device to the NI InsightCM Server system:

  1. Navigate to the Device Configuration page by clicking the Configuration pull-down menu in the navigation bar at the top of the page and selecting Devices.
  2. Click Add in the Devices tab. In the resulting dialog box, complete the steps appropriate for your device:
    • If the device is not connected to the network with a known IP address:
      1. Select Create an offline device and click Next.
      2. Use the Device Type pull-down menu to select the item that describes the device you want to add. For an explanation of device types, refer to Device and Software Types.
      3. Configure the Slots section to reflect the modules in the offline device. Click Next.
    • If the device is connected to the network with a known IP address:
      1. Select Connect to an online device and enter the IP address in the textbox, or click Browse to see a list of devices on the same subnet as the server machine.
      2. To automatically check for common issues that prevent a device from connecting to NI InsightCM Server and coming online, click the Connect button. The NI InsightCM web application opens the Test Connection dialog box and checks for issues.
Note  If a check fails, this dialog box provides information about how to resolve the issue. However, you can continue adding the device even without resolving failed checks.
      3. Click Next.
      4. If the device passed all tests in the Test Connection dialog box, the NI InsightCM web application detects and displays the controller and modules the device contains. Ensure the configuration on screen reflects the modules in the offline device and then click Next.
  3. If the server contains device-configuration templates you previously saved, you can select one. Click Next.
Tip  Templates can save you time by automatically configuring certain settings in the device configuration.
  4. Enter the two types of names for the device:
    • Device Name—The name you want to appear throughout the NI InsightCM web application. Assign an easily identifiable name, such as one that indicates the physical device location or the equipment it monitors.
    • Hardware Name—The hostname of the device, which is in the format of NI-cRIO-ModelNumber-SerialNumber by default. If the device is online, NI InsightCM Server automatically populates this name. Otherwise, you can find the two values printed on a label on the back of the device.
  5. Click Finish. The NI InsightCM web application loads the Device Configuration page for the new device. Before you save the device configuration for the first time, go through the checklist of tasks to complete after adding a device configuration. When you complete these steps, you ensure the device acquires useful data as soon as it connects to NI InsightCM Server.
  6. The NI InsightCM web application prompts you to send the connection information to the device web server. Click No.
  7. Go through the checklist of tasks to complete after adding a device configuration. When you complete these steps, you ensure the device acquires useful data as soon as it connects to NI InsightCM Server.
Note  After you have completed the checklist, you can send the connection information to the device web server by selecting the device from the list of devices on the Devices tab on the Device Configuration page and selecting Connection»Reset Connection in the Action menu .
