Location: In the navigation bar at the top of the page, click the arrow next to the Configuration button and select Devices in the pull-down menu. Double-click a device in the list on the Devices tab.

This tab allows you to map the assets you create on the Asset Configuration page to device channels and group those channels into data groups.

What do you want to do?

Task Action
Map an asset to a device channel. Select a channel in the Channels section of the tab and click the asset you want to map to it.
Note  You can only select sensors that are compatible with the channel you are mapping. All other assets will be grayed out in the asset tree. For example, you cannot map a static 9205 voltage channel to an accelerometer sensor.
Define a data group. Click Manage Data Groups and click Add in the dialog box that displays. In the resulting dialog box, select the top-level asset for the data group. The name of that asset determines the name of the data group.
Assign a channel to a data group. Select a channel in the Channels section of the tab and click the Select Data Group button. Use the Select Data Group dialog box to find the data group you want to assign the channel to.

Device and Module Limitations on Channel Types

The NI InsightCM web application controls the channel and measurement types you can configure for a module according to a couple properties:

  • The type of module to which the channel belongs—For example, the NI 9213 supports only thermocouple channels and temperature measurements. However, some modules have built-in support for a variety of sensors and support multiple channel types. For example, the NI 9232 supports accelerometer, velocity, displacement, voltage, and tachometer channels.
  • The application the device runs—For example, devices running the application for NI Transient, Periodic and Event Recorder devices (CMS-9036) must have module 1 connected to a tachometer. Therefore, the NI InsightCM web application requires all channels on module 1 to have a channel type of tachometer.
