Configuring NI InsightCM Server to send alarm notifications emails is a multi-part process: configuring SMTP server information, defining the recipients and email contents to send, and then linking the recipients and contents to an alarm rule.

Configuring SMTP Server Information

NI InsightCM Server acts as a SMTP client and sends SMTP messages to a SMTP server. Therefore, you do not need to set up SMTP software, but you must provide information about the SMTP server to which you want to send emails:

  1. Click the navigation menu and select Options.
  2. In the tree on the left, select SMTP under the Notifications section.
  3. Modify the Configure SMTP section to enable NI InsightCM Server to send emails via an SMTP server of your choice.
Note  NI InsightCM stores the password you set in the Options dialog as plain text.

Defining Groups of Recipients for a Notification

Completing this section and the next one prior to defining new alarm rules is useful because it allows you to configure all the properties of a rule at the same time.

  1. Click the navigation menu and select Options.
  2. In the tree on the left, select Address Groups under the Notifications section.
  3. Click the Add button and enter a descriptive name for the group so you can easily identify it in the list of available templates when you define a rule.
  4. Enter the email addresses to which you want to send the notification.

Defining an Email Template to Explain an Alarm

Notice that you define an email template independently of the address group you just defined. This is useful because you can pair one address group with multiple different templates and vice versa. For example, you might want to notify a single individual when a low-severity alarm occurs, but notify several individuals with the same message when a high-severity alarm occurs.

  1. Click the navigation menu and select Options.
  2. In the tree on the left, select Email Templates under the Notifications section.
  3. Click the Add new email template button and enter a descriptive name for the template that describes its contents so you can easily identify it in the list of available templates when you define a rule.
  4. Enter the subject and body text to use in the email notification. Both fields support a set of strings that instruct NI InsightCM Server to insert actual system or device data at that position in the email. For example, for an alarm that occurs when chassis temperature rises above a set point, you can enter one of these strings that NI InsightCM Server will replace with the actual chassis temperature at the time the alarm is set.

For a complete list of these strings, refer to the List of Strings that Insert Dynamic Information in Notifications.

Linking Alarm Rules to Recipients and Email Templates

When you add or edit an alarm rule, you can now assign an address group and email template you created. NI InsightCM Server generates email notifications according to these settings whenever it sets the alarm.
