Parent Topic: Writing Values to PI Points in the PI System Software

To ensure that PI point names follow a uniform pattern and contain minimal errors, you can define patterns that create and insert static characters and dynamic information into point names. For example, if you define a point name pattern of Location_{path}_{unit}, the resulting point name looks similar to Location_NorthSite_Motor_AccelerometerX_RMS_g.

Note  The default point name pattern is the {path} token.

Customizing the Names of Features and Spectral Bands in PI Point Names

If the default names of features and spectral bands in the NI InsightCM web application do not conform to the naming scheme you want to use, you can use the Custom Feature Names tab on the Historian page to define custom names to replace the defaults. When you apply a point name pattern that is designed to insert the name of a feature, the NI InsightCM web application inserts the custom name instead of the default name. For example, if you do not want the name of the Peak-Peak PI point to contain a dash, you can replace it with PeakPeak.
