Test Equipment

The following table lists the test instruments required for calibrating the PXIe-4330/4331.

If this instrument is unavailable, use a calibrator that can provide resistance values in the range of 120 Ω to 1 kΩ with 0.01 Ω resolution, an accuracy of 90 ppm or better, automatic lead wire compensation, and 2-wire output compensation.
DMMs (x2) NI 4071 If this instrument is unavailable, use multiranging 6 1/2 digit DMMs with a DC voltage accuracy of 40 ppm or better of reading + 6 ppm of range for the 10 V and 1 V ranges, and 4-wire resistance measurement capability with resistance accuracy of 80 ppm or better of reading + 6 ppm range for the 100 kΩ range.
PXI Express Chassis PXIe-1062Q If this chassis is unavailable, use another PXI Express chassis.
Connection Accessory* TB-4330 terminal block Screw terminal accessory (10 V) for the PXIe-4330/4331.
Note: One TB-4330 terminal block is included in the NI Switch Fixture (538850A-10).

*  The NI Switch Fixture 538850A-10 includes one TB-4330 terminal block for the PXIe-4330/31, two TB-2636 terminal blocks for PXI-2529 switches, and the resistors required for bridge completion and input offset.

  You can use two 350 Ω resistors, with at least 1% tolerance and TCR of 5 ppm/°C or equivalent, in parallel in place of each 175 Ω resistor.

  Three TB-4330 terminal blocks (in addition to the one included in the switch fixture) are required for the manual shunt quarter-bridge verification test.

Note Note  Though the Fluke 5500 calibrator has specifications matching those named in the PXIe-433x Calibration Procedure, there are physical interactions of the DUT which cannot properly read resistance values sourced by this calibrator at all test points.
Note Note  To ensure accuracy, the NI Switch Fixture requires the use of the Fluke 5520 calibrator and that both DMMs are PXI-4071 devices.

Test Conditions

The following setup and environmental conditions are required to ensure the PXIe-4330/4331 meets published specifications.

  • Keep connections to the device as short as possible. Long cables and wires act as antennas, picking up extra noise that can affect measurements
  • Use shielded copper wire for all cable connections to the device. Use twisted-pair wire to eliminate noise and thermal offsets.
  • Maintain an ambient temperature of 23 °C ±5 °C.
  • Keep relative humidity below 80%.
  • Allow a warm-up time of at least 15 minutes to ensure that the measurement circuitry is at a stable operating temperature.
  • Ensure that the PXI Express chassis fan speed is set to HIGH, that the fan filters are clean, and that the empty slots contain filler panels. For more information, refer to the Maintain Forced-Air Cooling Note to Users document available at ni.com/manuals.

Device Setup

  1. Install the PXIe-4330/4331 in the PXI Express chassis according to the instructions in the NI SC Express 4330/4331 Installation Guide and Terminal Block Specifications.
  2. Configure the hardware using Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX).
  3. Launch the Calibration Executive procedure. Calibration Executive guides you through the required connections.
Note Note  The Calibration Executive procedure will instruct you to perform an "OHMS ZERO" operation during setup. If either this operation or a full calibrator zero has been performed in the past 12 hours, click Continue to skip this operation. Refer to the calibrator documentation for instructions on how to perform an "OHMS ZERO" operation using calibrator manual controls.

Initial Switch Fixture Connection Setup

Preliminary Setup (before running the Calibration Executive procedure)

  1. Setup a PXI Express Chassis with the standards pictured below. Depending on the PXI Express Chassis type, the ordering of the slots may differ.

  2. Ensure that each module is connected to the appropriate back plane connection (PXI or PXIe), that each instrument is shown in MAX once connected, and that the connection wires are long enough to reach the necessary modules.
  3. Before running the Calibration Executive procedure, connect the TB-4330 to the PXIe-4330/4331 in the chassis, and confirm that it is connected in MAX.
  4. Connect the TB-2636 labeled "Sw1" to the first PXIe-2529 switch module.
  5. Connect the TB-2636 labeled "Sw2" to the second PXIe-2529 module.
    Note Note  For all terminal blocks, ensure that connections are flush to the chassis modules and tighten all screws to ensure a stable connection. Bad connections of the switch fixture terminal blocks can cause false failures of verification tests.
  6. Connect the wires labeled "DMM 1 HI" and "DMM 1 LO" to the HI and LO Voltage terminals of the first DMM.
  7. Connect the wires labeled "DMM 2 HI+", "DMM 2 LO-", "DMM 2 Sense+", and "DMM 2 Sense-" to the appropriate terminals of the second DMM.

Setup After Completion of Calibrator Zero Operation

  1. Connect the wires labeled "Cal+", "Cal-", "CalSense+", and "CalSense-" to the calibrator after completing either the OHMS ZERO or CAL ZERO operation. You can connect these wires either before starting the Calibration Executive procedure or after the prompt during the procedure setup.
    Note Note  The wires must be disconnected while running the calibrator zero operation.

Setting Up Switches and Standards

  1. During the Calibration Executive Device Setup Wizard, select the appropriate DMM resource names for the corresponding connection wires.
  2. The PXIe-2529 switch modules are specified immediately after the Device Setup Wizard has completed. Before warm up, a pop-up dialog will appear, requesting the switch type and switch module resource name.
    1. Select NI 2529 x2 for the switch model name, and designate Switch 1's resource name to correspond to the PXIe-2529 with the TB-2536 labeled "Sw1" attached, and Switch 2's resource name to correspond to the PXIe-2529 with the TB-2636 labeled "Sw2" attached.
  3. After selecting the correct locations of the two PXIe-2529 modules, select Continue.

Switch Maintenance

To ensure proper operation of the switches used in this procedure, you must periodically test the performance of your switch. Refer to the NI 2503/2529 Switch Performance Test for instructions on validating the performance of the NI 2529 used in this procedure.

Test Limit Equations

The following test limits are derived from the published specifications.

Gain Accuracy
