Use the main window to create a reference attribute and apply it to a reference without modifying a project document source file.

Creating a Reference Attribute

Complete the following steps to create a reference attribute in the Coverage Analysis or Impact Analysis view.

  1. In the Coverage Analysis or Impact Analysis view, select a requirement or covering element in the Selection column.
  2. Select a covering element in the Downstream Coverage Information or Downstream Impact Information column, or select a second requirement in the Upstream Coverage Information or Upstream Impact Information column.
  3. Right-click and select Add a reference attribute from the context menu to display a submenu with the following options:
Note Note  If the submenu contains only one option (Empty), select Use internal types on the General tab of the Options pane so that Requirements Gateway displays the following options.
    • Define a Boolean Reference Attribute—Launches a dialog box in which you can specify a name for a new Boolean reference attribute.
    • Define a Value Reference Attribute—Launches a dialog box in which you can specify a name and value for a new Value reference attribute.
  4. Select Define a Boolean Reference attribute or Define a Value Reference attribute.
  5. Specify an attribute name in the Type reference attribute name control of the dialog box and click OK. If you are creating a Value reference attribute, Requirements Gateway launches a second dialog box, in which you can specify the value for the reference attribute.
  6. Select the requirement and covering element again, right-click, and select Add a reference attribute. Select the reference attribute you created from the submenu to add the attribute to the reference.

Requirements Gateway saves the added information in a separate filename_modification_.txt file in the same directory as the project and applies a modification file to the original project document. Requirements Gateway displays a yellow icon on the original project document to indicate that the document has a modification file applied.

Reviewing Reference Attributes in a Project

Review reference attributes in one of the following ways:

  • In the Coverage Analysis view, select a requirement or covering element. The reference attribute displays under the covering element in the Downstream Coverage Information column or the covered requirement in the Upstream Coverage Information column.
  • In the Coverage Analysis view, when you select a covered requirement in the Upstream Coverage Information column or a covering element in the Downstream Coverage Information column, the corresponding Reference Attributes pane on the Texts and Reference Attributes tab displays the reference attribute, if applicable.
  • In the Impact Analysis view, when you select a covered requirement in the Upstream Impact Information column or a covering element in the Downstream Impact Information column, the corresponding Reference Attributes pane on the Texts and Reference Attributes tab displays the reference attribute, if applicable.
  • In the Graphical view, when you select a blue line between a requirement and a covering element, the Reference Attributes pane displays the reference attribute.
Note Note  The blue between a requirement and a covering element indicates that the reference contains an attribute. Otherwise, Requirements Gateway displays a black line between a requirement and a covering element.

Removing a Reference Attribute

To delete a reference attribute that you create in Requirements Gateway, right-click the reference attribute and select Delete from the context menu.

Refer to the <Requirements Gateway Public>\Examples\Reference Attribute and Filter\Maturity Level.rqtf for an example that demonstrates how to create, review, and remove a reference attribute.
