Creating a Custom String Property in a Visio Document

In Microsoft Visio 2007, you must define a custom string property named Requirements Traceability on the shape data for a drawing and use the custom property to specify the correct syntax for a Visio requirement or reference. In Visio 2003, you must define the custom property on the drawing itself.

(Visio 2007) Complete the following steps to specify a custom string property named Requirements Traceability for the shape data of a drawing in Visio 2007.

  1. In Visio 2007, right-click the shape you want to use as a requirement or reference and select Data»Shape Data from the context menu, or right-click the page you want to use as a requirement or reference and select Data»Shape Data from the context menu. If Visio prompts you to define shape data, click Yes.
  2. In the Define Shape Data dialog box, enter the following values and click OK:
    • Label—Requirements Traceability
    • Type—String
  3. In the Shape Data dialog box, enter the correct syntax for a Visio requirement or reference in the Requirements Traceability control and click OK.

(Visio 2003) Complete the following steps to specify a custom string property named Requirements Traceability for a drawing in Visio 2003.

  1. In Visio 2003, right-click the shape you want to use as a requirement or reference and select Properties from the context menu, or right-click the page you want to use as a requirement or reference and select Shape»Custom Properties from the context menu. If Visio prompts you to define custom properties, click Yes.
  2. In the Define Custom Properties dialog box, enter the following values and click OK:
    • Label—Requirements Traceability
    • Type—String
  3. In the Custom Properties dialog box, enter the correct syntax for a Visio requirement or reference in the Requirements Traceability control and click OK.

For versions of Visio other than 2007 or 2003, refer to the documentation for the version of Microsoft Visio you use for more information about defining the shape data for a drawing.
