You configure a system definition file in the System Explorer window by adding, removing, and modifying options in the configuration tree, located on the left of the System Explorer window. You can configure a system definition file in the following ways:

• Configure the VeriStand Engine
• Add and Configure Hardware Devices
• Add and Configure Custom Devices
• Scale Channels on Hardware Devices
• Add and Configure Models
• Add User Channels and Calculated Channels
• Map Channels
• Add Alarms
• Add Procedures
• Create Aliases

Tips for Configuring the System Definition File

If you delete a node in the System Explorer configuration tree that other nodes reference, you must repair all references to the node and its children. For example, consider a calculated channel that produces values based on the value of another channel. If you delete the other channel, you must fix the reference for the calculated channel. Use the following features in System Explorer to learn about or fix broken references:

• To find the name of a deleted node that caused a broken dependency, open the System Explorer Errors dialog box.
• If you re-add a deleted node that caused a broken dependency, you can automatically repair all references to that node. Open the System Explorer Errors dialog box and click the Update Dependencies button.
• If you re-add a deleted node that caused a broken dependency, and then you browse to the page in System Explorer that contains a reference to that node, NI VeriStand automatically repairs the reference.
