Replacing a Fuse on the NI SwitchBlock Carrier

An LED on the backplane inside the NI SwitchBlock carrier indicates the condition of the carrier fuse. The carrier fuse is field replaceable. If one of the following scenarios occurs, you need to replace the fuse:

  • The LED inside the carrier is off when the chassis in which the carrier is installed is powered on.
  • When you right-click a device in the carrier in the MAX configuration tree and select Self-Test, MAX returns an error that indicates the fuse in the carrier has blown.

Refer to the following table for information about ordering replacement fuses.

Use the following instructions to locate and replace the fuse.

Locate the Fuse

Complete the following steps to locate the fuse:

  1. Power off and unplug the NI PXI/PXI Express chassis.
  2. Remove all NI SwitchBlock cards from the carrier.
  3. Remove any installed NI 2806 expansion bridges.
  4. Remove the carrier from the NI PXI/PXI Express chassis.
  5. Locate the fuse on the backplane of the carrier directly below the connector for the leftmost card as shown in the following figure.

Replace the Fuse

Complete one of the following procedures to replace the fuse.

Replacement Method 1

Complete the following procedure if you would like to minimize the number of steps and tools required to replace the fuse.

  1. Insert a small pair of needle nose pliers into the front of the carrier and gently pull on the fuse to remove it from the fuse holder.
  2. Replace the fuse.
  3. Reinstall any cards and NI 2806 expansion bridges that you removed when you located the fuse.
    Caution Caution  If you removed one or more NI 2806 expansion bridges but do not plan to reinstall them, you must reinstall the expansion bridge connector covers on any unused expansion bridge connectors on the carrier.

Replacement Method 2

Complete the following procedure if you would like more work space when replacing the fuse.

  1. Use a T8 Torx® screwdriver to remove the six T8 screws that connect the backplane to the back of the carrier. If the expansion bridge connector covers are attached to the carrier, also remove the four T8 screws that connect expansion bridge connector covers to the carrier. Refer to the following figure.

  2. Remove the expansion bridge connector covers.
  3. Remove the backplane from the back of the carrier.
  4. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to gently pull on the fuse to remove it from the fuse holder.
  5. Replace the fuse.
  6. Reattach the backplane to the back of the carrier using the six T8 screws removed previously.
  7. Reinstall the carrier as well as any cards and NI 2806 expansion bridges that you removed when you located the fuse.
    Caution Caution  If you removed one or more NI 2806 expansion bridges but do not plan to reinstall them, you must reinstall the expansion bridge connector covers on any unused expansion bridge connectors on the carrier.
